Sometimes, MLMs are mistakenly represented as schemes for getting rich quickly. In reality, MLMs are just like any other organization, and will only be as successful as the amount of time, effort, and planning, that distributors put into them. The MLM business plan provides a compass for turning ideas into actions, and should be updated regularly, as the market changes.

Plans benefit marketers, by establishing a core mission. The purpose of a core mission is to focus the marketer on the fundamental strategy of the MLM. Core missions should also consider the factors which distinguish a particular MLM from its competitors, allowing marketers to promote their unique brand.

Plans address elements which are unique to MLMs. For instance, marketers may ask themselves how effectively they are reaching customers, and who their target market will be, when they have presented to all of their family and friends. An over-arching plan directs actions in the now. For instance, a marketer may decide to develop action plans to increase customer conversion, or to increase the sale of products. Action plans give marketers realistic goals and objectives. Measurements should be specific, such as the number customers converted per quarter, per month, or per week. Marketers will also need to decide who is available, both in their up-line and their downline, to offer assistance with reaching goals.

MLMs are not routes to quick riches, but they may become profitable businesses, with hard work and perseverance. No distributors will succeed, however, without an MLM business plan, which provides them with direction and action steps, to meet their objectives. Beginners may want to consider partnership with an expert in MLM planning, to gain an experienced viewpoint about whether ideas will succeed.
